About the founder
Dr Oliver Twizell
As a Chartered Counselling Psychologist, registered with both the HCPC and BPS, I offer assessment and evidence-based therapeutic intervention for my clients. I have specialist expertise in supporting individuals who are dealing with chronic stress, self-esteem issues, depression, trauma, and anxiety (whether generalised, social, or performance-related). I am trained in a range of therapeutic models, including CBT and EMDR. Primarily I use a person-centred approach, tailoring other therapies to meet your unique needs and circumstances. I specialise in working with high-performance individuals, including elite athletes and have experience working with clients across a range of sports organisations, including premier league football clubs, the RFU (Rugby Football Union), and RYA (Royal Yachting Association). I also proudly contribute to the UK Sports Institute Mental Health Practitioner Network. This is an exclusive network of practitioners that support the mental health of Olympic and Paralympic athletes as they navigate world-class programmes. My area of expertise is in helping high performers navigate the demands of their careers and personal lives, unlocking their full potential while maintaining balance and mental clarity, which optimises mental resilience in both areas. Whether you are new to therapy or have prior experience, I provide a confidential, supportive, and research-informed approach to help you explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours fostering a deeper understanding of yourself and your challenges. By focusing on the development of effective coping mechanisms, emotional regulation, and overall personal growth, my goal is to facilitate meaningful, sustainable change, enhancing your mental fitness and wellbeing. I’m also a published, peer-reviewed author with a specific focus on therapy in sport and exercise environments. My published work also addresses racism in football and how to best utilise mental health and wellbeing services within elite sporting environments. As well as a Counselling Psychologist, I’m also a Sport Performance Psychologist. I gained my professional doctorate from The University of Manchester Counselling Psychology Programme. I combine private practice with an NHS role as a specialist counselling psychologist. Within my private practice, I offer both face-to-face sessions at my clinic in Lymm and remote therapy for clients further afield. If you have any further questions or to book a session, please get in touch.
The mission
Why ’Mental Fitness Matters‘?
I created Mental Fitness Matters because I believe that mental health, like physical health, requires regular attention and care. I am dedicated to being your premier source for psychological therapy information in the UK, addressing all facets of mental health. My website offers detailed insights into therapy, guidance tailored to individual therapy approaches. If I am not available or specialist to your requirements, then I will seek to find someone within my network of highly qualified therapists to work with you.
I am committed to demystifying the field of psychology, often perceived as complex and overwhelming. My mission is to bring clarity and understanding to the various psychological professions and approaches. By providing clear job title definitions, the necessary qualifications for each role, and practical advice on what to ask your therapist, I ensure that you feel informed and confident in choosing the right therapist to navigate your mental health journey.
Our services
Mental Fitness Matters only recruit therapists with a specialist doctorate in therapy.
We offer a flexible approach to how and where we do therapy.
Our personal therapy is for anyone who feels they could benefit from our service. Alongside the general population, we also have a specialist division working with all athletes and high-performance individuals.
Team based psychological support involves an integrated bespoke approach with sport teams and organisations that is informed by the model devised and researched by Dr Oliver Twizell.
